Our Courses

We offer six online, self-directed courses powered by adaptive learning software.  From a beginner-level introduction to how and why aluminum processing works, up to advanced courses in sample preparation and recognizing sheet defects.  Course material is provided by an expert with decades of experience in identifying aluminum sheet defects.  Each section includes many full-colour unique images and customized questions.

Basics of Materials Characterization

This short module covers the early stages of sample preparation, including documenting your test plan, inspection, and cutting methods.

Sample Preparation

Metallography is a complex process with many potential pitfalls.  This module discusses best practices for mounting and preparing your sample to reveal the features of interest without creating misleading flaws.

Etching

Chemical etching is done to reveal the microstructure.  This module covers several common aluminum etches, including what they reveal, representative images, and advice for etching.

Artifacts

When there are problems polishing or imaging a material, artifacts are created.  This module covers recognition of common artifacts, and learning how to separate them from true microstructural features
